Netball WA Player Pathway
NetSetGO to Elite Representation

Netball WA provides a structured and inclusive pathway for athletes, guiding them from introductory programs to elite competitions. This pathway is designed to develop skills, identify talent, and offer opportunities for players across Western Australia.

Woolworths NetSetGO (Ages 5–10)

The entry point for young netballers, focusing on fun, skill development, and basic game understanding.

  • Net Tier (Ages 5–6): Introduces fundamental motor skills through play-based activities.

  • Set Tier (Ages 7–8): Refines basic skills and introduces modified netball matches.

  • GO Tier (Ages 9–10): Emphasizes netball-specific skills with modified rules to ease the transition into junior netball.

Program delivery ranges from 8 to 15 weeks, with sessions lasting 45 to 75 minutes. See link above.

Junior Netball (Ages 11–17)

Players progress to junior competitions through local clubs and associations, offering structured training and competitive matches to enhance skills and team play.

  • Club/School Teams: Participation in local leagues and school competitions.

  • Association Competitions: Opportunities to play at higher competitive levels within the region.

  • Regional Championships: Showcases talent across different regions, serving as a platform for talent identification.

Talent Development Programs

Identified players are invited to participate in development programs aimed at nurturing potential and preparing athletes for elite pathways.

  • Netball WA Development Academy (Ages 13–16): Focuses on skill and technical knowledge enhancement.

  • Fever in Time (FIT) Program: Exposes athletes to high-performance training environments.

  • State Cup: A selection phase for the 17/U Futures program.

Selection is based on performance in association competitions, regional championships, and talent identification events.

State Representation

Talented athletes may be selected to represent Western Australia in state teams, competing at national championships.

  • 12/U State Team: Managed by School Sport WA, recognized by Netball WA.

  • 15/U State Team: Participation in School Sport Australia Championships.

  • 17/U & 19/U State Teams: Compete in National Netball Championships.

Gold Industry Group West Australian Netball League (GIG WANL)

The GIG WANL is Western Australia's premier netball competition, serving as a critical step in the pathway to elite netball.

  • Divisions: Open, 21/U, and Men's.

  • Clubs: Eight clubs participate, including Curtin Hamersley Comets, Fremantle Sharks, Peel Lightning, Rangers, Southside Demons, ECU Souwest Jets, West Coast Warriors, and Western Roar.

  • WANL Futures Program: Introduced in 2024, this program provides developing athletes with exposure to high-level training and competition environments.

GIG WANL serves as the primary pathway to the West Coast Fever program for Western Australian netballers.

Elite Pathway

The pinnacle of the Netball WA pathway, leading to national and international representation.

  • West Coast Fever Futures: Bridges the gap between state and elite levels.

  • West Coast Fever Academy & Reserves: Prepares athletes for professional competition.

  • West Coast Fever (Suncorp Super Netball): WA's premier netball team competing at the national level.

  • Australian Diamonds: National team representing Australia in international competitions.

Athletes may also be selected for national squads at 17/U, 19/U, and 21/U levels, as well as Fast5 and other international formats.

Inclusive and Regional Pathways

Netball WA is committed to inclusivity and regional development, offering tailored programs to ensure all athletes have access to the pathway.

  • Regional Academies of Sport: Provide development opportunities for athletes in regional areas.

  • Aboriginal Grassroots Sites: Support the growth of netball within Aboriginal communities.

  • No Limits Program: Caters to players with intellectual disabilities, promoting participation and competition.

These programs ensure that geographical location or personal circumstances do not hinder access to netball development opportunities.
